Why Reusable Packaging is Becoming Attractive Beyond Beer
The packaging transition is no longer limited to traditional beer kegs or breweries with a high share of disposable containers. It is reshaping the entire beverage market – and opening up new perspectives for producers, bottlers, and the hospitality industry beyond established categories.
While beer sales are stagnating in many regions, other segments are gaining relevance: wine in gastronomy, fruit juices in retail, cocktail premixes at events, or nitro coffee in the to-go channel.
These beverages come with very different requirements for packaging and logistics – yet they all face similar challenges:
They are increasingly under regulatory pressure.
With the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the requirements for packaging systems are rising significantly. Disposable packaging is coming under pressure: higher EPR fees, stricter deposit obligations, and new requirements for recycled content are making it less attractive.
At the same time, the PPWR obliges companies to meet binding return quotas, pursue reuse targets, and provide comprehensive sustainability documentation. Packaging will have to be documented, assessed, and optimized across its entire life cycle.
The consequence: It is no longer just the individual container that matters – but the entire system behind it. Cost efficiency, traceability, recyclability, and resource efficiency are becoming more important than ever.
This transformation brings opportunities: Many beverages can now be economically and ecologically integrated into scalable reuse systems – provided that containers, infrastructure, and return processes are aligned.
Developments in specific segments illustrate this clearly:
In all these scenarios, stainless steel reusable containers provide a solid foundation. They combine durability with traceability, circularity with cost efficiency – and enable existing infrastructures to be extended to new applications and target groups.
The market is changing – and within this change lies potential. Not every segment needs its own system. Those who make efficient use of existing structures, proactively comply with regulatory requirements, and see packaging as a strategic lever can tap into new target groups – and make their packaging strategy future-proof.
