Durable containers as an ecological and regulatory response to the PPWR

When people talk about sustainable packaging, they often focus on recycled materials, carbon footprints and bans on single-use items. But truly sustainable solutions start earlier – with the choice of system. Stainless steel kegs are designed for a service life of 30 years or more. Their resistance to temperature, pressure and chemicals makes them ideal containers for automated cleaning processes and long-term multiple use – even under demanding conditions.

Another advantage is that at the end of their very long life cycle, the materials can be separated by type and are almost 100% recyclable. This saves resources and supports the implementation of the PPWR, which will make design for recycling a mandatory requirement from 2030 onwards. Stainless steel already meets this requirement today.

Sustainability with economic leverage

In addition to the ecological perspective, stainless steel also offers economic advantages. Durable containers generate less waste, require less post-production and reduce the cost of deposit and sorting systems – especially in closed cycles.

They also score well in EPR cost models, where EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility: Those who use packaging that is durable and completely reusable can in many cases expect lower fees. What's more, stainless steel makes it much easier to provide evidence of recyclability, material use and return rates – a key factor in complying with the PPWR.

Sustainability does not end with the choice of an ‘environmentally friendly’ material. It begins with the decision to opt for a system that is sustainable in the long term: economically, ecologically and regulatory.
